Your home is your castle and it is the place where you should feel the safest. Even though nowadays you should have a home security system installed. A home alarm system can protect you while you are at home and also act as an invisible security guard when you are away. But how can you protect yourself when you are away from the safety of your home.

Personal Defense Tools

There are a variety of tools available that can protect you in the event of an attack. Obviously you can go and take self defense classes but this can take more time than you have available and it does not suit everyone. The most popular self defense tools are:

  • Pepper Spray
  • Stun Guns
  • Taser
  • Panic Alarms

Pepper Spray

Pepper spray is made from an extract of chili peppers and usually comes in an aerosol canister so you can spray it quickly and easily. Since its portable and easy to use, pepper spray is a popular option for both law enforcement and personal use. When sprayed into the face of an attacker, it’s extremely irritating to the skin, eyes, mouth, throat and lungs. Its effect is immediate and powerful, and it can distract a person long enough for you to escape an assailant, or for a police officer to take control of a subject.

The average pepper spray on the market today has a range of anywhere from 8 feet up to 20 feet allowing you to use the device from considerable distance away from your would be attacker. The limitations of pepper spray are that your attacker must be hit in or around the area of their face for it to be effective.

Stun Guns and Tasers

Stun guns and tasers are a popular choice when it comes to protecting yourself. This due to the low skill level required for them to be effective and in the event of an accident there is no long term damage. If you accidently are surprised and use the stun gun it will provide a nasty surprise but there is no irreparable harm done. The stun gun is a handheld device that has two prongs. When the prongs are touched to an attacker the closed electrical circuit triggers the charge. The taser is the long distance version that allows you to shoot out the prongs at an assailant.

Panic Alarms

Personal safety alarms are small and easy to carry by anyone. They can fit into a pocket or purse or even clip to a belt. The device emits a very loud sound usually in the range of 120 decibels or more.

This is more than adequate to scare off an attacker and also alert others to your problem.

  • 110 decibel -Regular exposure of more than 1 minute risks permanent hearing loss.
  • 100 decibel –No more than 15 minutes of unprotected exposure is recommended
  • 85 Decibel-prolonged exposure can cause hearing loss

This form of protection unlike other forms cannot be taken away from you and used against you so it is a very effective form of self protection. It can be used without any special training and there are no permits required. You can even carry these on airplanes. This device can even be effective against animal attacks.
